About “The Metals”

Few weeks ago, I was walking around Dun Laoghaire when I saw a sign at the beginning of the Royal Marine Road (basically the long street in front of the harbor with all the shops and restaurants) about the construction of a walking area called “The Metals”. I have been around here few years and never ever I heard that name before.

Half and hour later I was in the new Easons (where Hughes and Hughes used to be) and when I was paying at the till I saw a book just there called “The Metals“. Immediately, I decided to get it (well, I just checked quickly the price: Just 10 euro). I was sure, I could get some information than I have (which it was nothing).

So, after 40 pages of the book, I realized that the path that joins People´s Park in Dun Laoghaire and Dalkey is know as The Metals and I did not know it. I cycled that few times, but I never knew anything about the history behind. This path was where the old rail line run to bring the granite from Dalkey
Quarry to Dun Laoghaire for the construction of the harbor.

Mountains to the Sea Festival

A couples of week later, I had time to get more into details when I heard about the Dun Laoghaire Book Festival, “Mountains to the Sea“. There, I attended to the event “The Landscape of Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown” where Rob Goodbody, author of “The Metals” was there to talk about it. Also, together with Eanna Lamhna and Chris Corllet, they talked about wild life and archeological of the area. I have to say I enjoyed it very much. Congratulations for the book and the festival!
